How one Red Sea harbour ended up in coffee-shop menus around the world, and why we borrowed its name.
On the coast of Yemen, facing the Red Sea, sits a town called al‑Mukhā. From roughly the 15th to the 18th century it was the world’s main coffee market. Beans grown on terraced farms in the Yemeni highlands were carried down to its harbour, then shipped on to Cairo, Istanbul and, later, Amsterdam and London.
Merchants from India, Egypt and Europe kept warehouses in the town. For a long stretch, if you drank coffee anywhere in the world, it had very likely passed through this one port.
“Mocha” started out as an address.
Buyers named the coffee after the place they bought it, so “Mocha” started out as an address. As coffee began to be grown in other parts of the world, the port slowly lost its trade, but the name stayed on.
Over time the word drifted onto chocolate-coloured drinks and into the vocabulary of cafés everywhere, mostly without its geography. Today many people order a mocha without knowing there was ever a harbour behind it.
We wanted to give the word its geography back. Aqaba sits at the northern tip of the same sea, so it felt natural to name our house after the port where the coffee trade began.
The rest of the name is a small pun in our tagline, «مخا ع مخك»: Mokha on your mind. We hope that’s where we stay after your first visit.
